The Boston Red Sox are off to an excellent start in the 2024 season, but it has not been all good news.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow revealed shortstop Trevor Story will undergo surgery Friday for his fractured shoulder, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. It could sideline him for the rest of the season given the expected recovery time of approximately six months.

The update came after manager Alex Cora previously said Story may need surgery on the shoulder because "there's concern with the bone structure," per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.

Story left last Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels when he suffered the injury on a backhand dive attempt for a ball hit by Mike Trout.

"Frustrating, man," Story said at the time, per Greg Beacham of the Associated Press. "A lot of emotions. We don't know how severe it is just yet, but a lot of frustration. ... Pretty painful."

Injuries have largely defined the shortstop's tenure with the Red Sox since they signed him ahead of the 2022 campaign. He played 94 games during his first season with the team and missed time with injuries to his right hand and left foot. He followed that up by playing just 43 games in 2023 because of offseason surgery on his right elbow.

As a result, he has been unable to replicate his impact from his first six seasons in the league on the Colorado Rockies.

Story was a two-time All-Star and one of the best shortstops in the league for extended stretches with the Rockies. He led MLB in stolen bases (15) and triples (four) during the shortened 2020 campaign after launching 35 home runs in 2019 and 37 home runs in 2018.

He also won Silver Slugger awards in back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019.

Boston has turned to David Hamilton and Pablo Reyes at shortstop since Story suffered the injury and may continue to do so as it attempts to tread water without its primary player at the position.

The team is 7-3 on the campaign and begins a three-game series against the division-rival Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
